I feel that "beauty" is something that cannot be obtained if one tries to seek it directly, just as fruits or water move away when Tantalus reaches for them. In fact, it's not easy to define what beauty is.
However, my ultimate dream is to create work that will be eternally beautiful, something that will still be considered beautiful as time passes. The ambition to create something eternally beautiful might be as fleeting and dreamlike as the life of a mayfly from a human perspective. Since no one has clearly defined beauty until now, I've decided to substitute it with "nature" for easier understanding. After all, in the past and present, nature has remained constant while changing and has always been considered beautiful. Observing nature provides diverse inspiration for my work. I would be very satisfied if someone recalls a beautiful scene from nature they once saw and felt when looking at my work.
And creating functional everyday objects from clay using the beauty discovered in nature is like a game with rules. Creating something as beautiful as possible within the minimal constraints of ensuring functionality. The delicate balance between free imagination and functional elements is my pleasure. I believe that an object's "purpose" makes its meaning deeper and broader. When the object touches my hand, I feel its texture on my skin, physical experiences arise, usage patterns form, and narratives and memories between the object and me develop. It becomes an object that shares time and space with me through experience. That's why I cannot give up on the purpose and function of objects.
And it would be very rewarding and gratifying if the actions and gestures of the person using the object could all convey one message and meaning. That is the challenge and goal of my ceramic work.
“아름다움”이란 것은 탄탈로스가 손 뻗으면 과일이나 물이 멀어져 버리듯이, 그 자체를 구하려 하면 구해지지 않는 그런 것 같단 느낌이 든다. 사실 그게 뭔지 정의하기도 쉽지 않다. 하지만 영원히 아름다울, 시간이 지나도 아름답다고 여겨질 그런 작업을 하고 싶은 것이 궁극적인 꿈이다. 한낱 영원히 아름다운 무언갈 만들어내겠다는 포부는 어쩌면 인간이 바라보는 하루살이의 생과 같이 덧없고 꿈만 같다.
이제까지 누구도 명확히 정의하지 못한 아름다움을 너도 나도 이해하기 쉽도록 일단 “자연”으로 대체하여 생각하기로 했다. 과거에도 현재에도 자연은 변하면서도 그대로 있고 아름답다고 여겨져 왔으니까. 자연 관찰은 작업에 대한 영감을 다양하게 준다. 누군가가 내 작업물 속에서 언젠가 자신이 보았고 느꼈던 아름다운 자연 속의 한 장면을 떠올린다면 아주 흡족할 것이다.
그리고 그렇게 발견한 자연의 아름다움을 흙이란 재료로 일상에서 사용할 수 있는 기능을 가진 물건으로 만들어낸다는 것은 룰이 있는 게임 같다. 기능을 할 수 있어야 한다는 최소한의 제한 속에서 최대한 아름답게. 자유로운 상상력과 기능적인 요소 사이의 아슬아슬한 줄타기는 나의 즐거움이다. 물건의 “용도”라는 것은 물건의 의미를 더욱 깊고 넓게 해준다는 생각을 한다. 물체와 내 손이 닿고, 감촉을 피부로 느끼며 신체적인 경험이 생겨나고, 사용 패턴이 생기기도 하면서 물건과 나의 서사와 기억이 생겨나기도 한다.
시공간을 함께하며 경험하는 물건이 되는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 물건의 용도와 기능도 포기할 수 없는 부분이다. 그리고 물건을 사용하는 사람의 행위와 몸짓까지 모두 한 메시지와 의미를 담아내게 된다면 아주 보람 있고 감사한 일일 것이다. 그것이 나의 도자작업의 과제이고 목표이다.
